 +===== Explaining Lag =====
 +
 +Players are generally not very good at explaining what they mean when they say "lag", and apply the label to multiple different problems. The first step is to identify which issue you have, to see if there's something that can be fixed:
 +
 +  * FPS - Low Frames Per Second is related to hardware and settings in the game. This is usually visible as the game becomes more choppy and doesn't feel very smooth. In GW2's case typically CPU related, since the game is horrible at using multi-threading and thus struggle with any situation with lots of players or npcs on the screen at the same time. There's a few settings you can change to help with this, especially turn down Shadows and the number of Models of different types as low as possible.
 +  * Ping/Latency - The traditional "lag", like when I sit in EU and play on NA servers, I tend to get anywhere from 130-170 ping most of the time. This is usually seen/felt in that everything you see on the screen is 1-2 seconds late, so you don't have as much time to react to things before they hit you. This is based on ISP, routing, distance and quality of the wires in-between. There's usually not much you (or ANet) can do about this.
 +  * Server-Lag/Skill-Lag - This is specifically when the server is getting overloaded with input (from players). If you have 3 zergs of 50 players all mashing their buttons at the same time, the poor server is getting thousands of input at the same time, it tries to handle. This is effectively a DDOS attack on the server for all practical purposes. This is visible when your skills just sort of blink but doesn't activate, especially when entire zergs stand there and can't do anything and just waiting for their skills to go off. There are some ways for ANet to fix this, but it's tricky.
 +
 +
 +What ANet can (or can't) do about Server-Lag:
 +
 +  - Better hardware - Generally little to no effect, since they hire server racks from big company (Amazon), and they pay for a performance plan, and if the server is under load the server rack will generally detect this and use additional resources to deal with it. That's how server racks are built up these days. So unless ANet just goofed up and bought a way too low plan, you probably can't improve their server hardware.
 +  - Better connection - Generally, again, the Amazon servers are likely placed in one of the most advantageous spots for fiber access in their locations for practical business reasons. It's very unlikely they can really improve upon that.
 +  - Software backend - The most drastical thing ANet could do is to re-haul/major cleanup the entire server and client network code, to make it more efficient and solid. This is a major job, likely rewriting several core parts of the engine, and would likely take years of time, with good parts of their senior coders. In short it's very likely way too much work that doesn't generate income, thus it's not economical for ANet to do this.
 +  - Small adjustments - Like reducing the max cap of players on a map, this has been tested in the past and the Devs at the time admitted that this worked. But players also dislike when the player numbers get reduced, so they increased it again trying to find a decent compromise. Which is where we are at today. They could reduce it, it would help, but yes that means less players per map. Say from 70-80 somewhere and down to 50 or so.
 +  - Skill-changes - Go through all the actual skills, add casting times to all skills so you can't spam 2-5 skills at the same time, make skills take longer to activate, longer cooldowns, tweak so players doesn't want to spam skills constantly upon contact. Basically make it so players can use less skills at the same time, less boons and conditions to calculate, less things triggering at the same time etc. It would require to completely overhaul the entire balance of the game so it's not going to be done. Again lots of work for ANet without any clear profit.
